Held Hostage By Your Addictions?

Wellness Topics

The dictionary defines addiction as the “compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance or situation.”

People are commonly addicted to drugs, alcohol, work, the computer, shopping, sex, gambling, tobacco, eating and spending. Addictions can rob you of your ability to live a normal, happy, healthy and free life as an addict becomes unable to control their use or involvement with the offending behavior.

Some addictions kill; others hold individuals and their families hostage; others rob an individual of all worldly possessions, spiritual connections, and feelings of self-esteem and well being. Just ask any recovering addict about the devastation they felt, along with those around them, because of their behaviors.

Are you held hostage by an addiction? Here are some suggestions:

• Make a list of your negative habits/addictions
• Join a 12-Step program or other support group
• Consult a mental health care professional who specializes in your particular type of addiction
• Replace bad habits (addictions) with good habits (exercise, sports, hobbies, positive friends)
• Avoid the people, places and things you associate with the negative behavior (negative friends, bars, shopping malls, the computer, chat rooms, casinos)
• Learn Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) (see http://www.mercola.com/forms/eftcourse1.htm for more information)
• Pay attention to your thoughts, don’t give fuel to thoughts about your addiction
• Be patient; just as your addiction didn’t happen overnight, neither will your recovery –perseverance is the key
• Use positive affirmations to re-program your mind
• Keep a journal that documents your progress and helps you with introspection
• Engage in spiritual activities (prayer, meditation, yoga, service to others) to grow your spiritual muscles; these can help keep thoughts of the bad habit at bay

Addictions are never easy to overcome and relapse is common. Just as your descent into addiction took time, so does the long climb out of the “black hole” of addiction.

Why are some people allergic to pollen and others aren't?
It's not the pollen. Chiropractors know that if it were, everyone would be allergic to pollen, nuts and pet dander. But that's not the case. It's the person, not the pollen! If you live in Mississauga and your stress levels are high, then each year the grass, the trees or the weeds put your nervous system over the top. Many report that chiropractic care helps reduce the frequency and severity of their allergic response.
What controls your pulse, blood pressure and cholesterol?
Conventional health care focuses on the various aspects of your blood. But these are merely effects. Chiropractic focuses on the integrity of your nervous system that controls, regulates and monitors every aspect of your circulatory system, every aspect of your body and every person in Mississauga.
